Wisdom teeth coming in and developing in your mouth is extremely common. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth that grow into your mouth, generally between the ages of 17-25.
There are four common questions asked when a patient is getting their wisdom teeth out at Thunderbird Dental. These include:
1) Why do I need my wisdom teeth removed?
Due to a softer diet, orthodontic tooth straightening, and other problems, wisdom teeth are not given room to erupt—causing problems that require having wisdom teeth removed.
Wisdom teeth frequently become impacted, which can lead to infection and pain. These impacted teeth can end up crowding or damaging adjacent teeth or roots.
2) When should I get my wisdom teeth removed?
Don’t wait until you see wisdom teeth coming in, it is generally a better idea to get your wisdom teeth removed early. This results in a less complicated healing process and prevents future problems.
Older patients with wisdom teeth were found to be at a greater risk for dental disease, such as periodontitis.
3) What happens during wisdom teeth extraction?
Before your surgery begins, your surgeon will tell you exactly what to expect from the operation. At this time, as any questions or express any worries you may have. It is always important to inform your doctor of any allergies or medication you are taking.
Wisdom tooth extraction is typically performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation or general anesthesia. The wisdom teeth will be removed easily, depending on the position of the tooth and root development.
4) What happens after my wisdom teeth are out?
After your extraction, you may experience swelling or minor discomfort in your jaw. This is completely normal and part of the healing process. Cold compresses are useful for decreasing swelling, and medication prescribed by the dentist at Thunderbird Dental will help ease discomfort.
